My baby was down with cough and phlegm last month. I learn from this blog post about steaming an onion and get its juice to relieve cough and phlegm.
Get one of those big red onions (not shallots) and cut them into eight quarters. Steam for about 10 minutes. You should be able to get around 20ml of onion juice.
It's recommended to give only one teaspoon (5ml) of onion juice to 6-month old babies. This remedy might not be suitable for young babies below six months.
I only gave one teaspoon to my baby and he didn't really like it, hahaha. You might want to give this remedy a try if your baby has the early stages of cough and phlegm.
Interesting. First time I heard of onion can help in cough and phlegm. Does it able to work on older kids, such as 5 yo and above? My kids currently down with cough
ReplyDeleteHi Rose, I remember reading somewhere that for older kids, cut 2-3 big red onions into halves, put them in a bowl, and place the bowl near your kid's bed. Change the onions every 5-6 hours. You can try. Some mothers say this remedy work wonders.
DeleteAt the same time, you might want to feed your kids virgin coconut oil 1 tablespoon a day as immunity booster.
Hope my reply helps you. :)
Cheers,
Joyce
Hi my boy 19 month is down with cough and phlegm for 2 weeks. Can i feed him virgin coconut oil as immunity booster. Then 1 big onion to steam is it enough?
ReplyDeleteTks!
Hi there,
DeleteVCO is good for long-term immunity booster but you won't be seeing an overnight healing from cough and phlegm.
For steamed onion, you might need to try up to 3 days. Yes, 1 red big onion for each steaming session.
However, if it's already 2 weeks, perhaps you might want to bring your son to the pediatrician first to rule out any serious complication.
Hope my explanation helps.
Thanks! :)
