The first ever Shogun™ Fest in Malaysia 2012

The inaugural month-long food festival known as Shogun™ Fest was launched at Shogun Japanese Buffet Restaurant at One Utama Shopping Center last Thursday, 26th April 2012.

Shogun™ Fest is based on Japan's Cherry Blossom (Spring) festival. It's a month-long celebration with the introduction of special menu and delicacies that will only be available during this festival period, such as whole Roasted Lamb and Beef, Fresh Jumbo Oysters from New Zealand, Slipper Lobster, Silver Pomfret, and many more.

The opening ceremony was officiated by Dato' Sri Michael Chong, the current Managing Director of the Grand Saisaki Group. He said, "Besides celebrating the spring festival in Japan, this festival is also our show of appreciation for our loyal customers since the opening of our restaurants in 1999."

To mark the start of the celebration, a humongous 100kg Maguro (Tuna) was flown in from Maldives. Shogun's Japanese chefs, headed by Japanese Chef Usami Yasuro did a great job in showcasing their slicing and serving skill and expertise.

The super fresh Maguro was served immediately as fresh sashimi slices, maki, and sushi to eager guests.

My share of the fresh Maguro sushi. Delicately fresh and yummy!

For a wholesome experience of the festival, Shogun's Teppan Gelato, a premium Japanese dessert was also introduced for the first time in Malaysia. This ice-cream like dessert made on Teppan (remember Teppanyaki?) or metal pan shouldn't be missed!

We had a good time indulging in various kind of food!

******************************

Do visit any of the five Shogun™ and Saisaki™ Japanese Buffet Restaurant outlets in Klang Valley (Sunway Pyramid, One Utama, Menara UOA, SOHO Solaris Mont Kiara, Fahrenheit88) from 26th April till 25th May 2012 (on weekdays only) to witness for yourself this celebration.

Now, there are more than enough reasons to use my SHOGUN & SAISAKI Japanese Buffet Restaurant VIP card more often! :P

Project: Reflect 52 #17 - My shoes & I

I have a pair of yellow ballerina flats from Vincci. I love them so much and I even gotten myself lemonade yellow shades for my fingernails during my bridal shower to match them!

I have another pair of ballerina flats. They come with a lovely shade of creamy white. I adore the ribbons on top and at the tips of the ribbons are little bling-blings. Love them!

Aha! Here's a sneak peek of my 2.5-inch, custom-made wedding heels. Glittery gold and looking very glamorous! They will add extra bling to my tea ceremony cheongsam. :)

Lucky we ♥

Have you watched the movie UP? I still remembered how hard I try to stifle my sniffles for the first 30 minutes of the movie the first time I watched it in the cinema. The second time, I watched it on DVD and I cried a river.

Carl and Ellie - the sweetest couple on Pixar / Disney. The fact that Ellie died and left Carl alone, childless, broke my heart. Somehow, I couldn't forget the images of them growing up and getting old together, going through crisis after crisis; and in the finale, till death do them part...

Ellie's parting words on the last page of her My Adventure Book - "Thanks for the adventure - now go have a new one! Love, Ellie" - broke the dam and I couldn't stop crying. It's so heartbreaking.

I chose a few of their lovely images and put them together with this quote:

Lucky is the man who is the first love of a woman;
but luckier is the woman who is the last love of a man.

I just want to say:
Lucky we.

Movie: The Cabin in the Woods (2012)

You think you know the story.

The Cabin in the Woods (2012) is a horror movie produced by Joss Whedon (director of The Avengers).

Synopsis: Five friends - Dana (Kristen Connolly), Curt (Chris Hemsworth), Jules (Anna Hutchison), Marty (Fran Kranz), and Holden (Jesse Williams) are on a vacation and they are heading to a remote cabin in the woods, unknowingly stepping into the trap of an unknown operation conducted in an underground, sophisticated industrial facility.

Producer Joss Whedon describes The Cabin in the Woods as an attempt to revitalize the horror genre which he, along with director/co-writer Goddard (Cloverfield), felt had "devolved" with the introduction of "torture porn". He continues, "The things that I don't like are kids acting like idiots, the devolution of the horror movie into torture porn and into a long series of sadistic comeuppances."

In my opinion, this is a really creative movie, a must-watch for horror movie fans because it's likened to a giant onscreen jigsaw puzzle whereby you can try to put the pieces together and recognize horror icons / characters during the movie's climax (final 30-40 minutes). This gives the mainstream horror genre quite an awesome spin!

In the beginning, this movie opens with two different subplots; one about some technicians conducting an unknown operation in a facility, the other one about five friends driving into the woods for a vacation. 30 minutes or so into the movie, the two subplots merge and your horror-fun ride begins!

Okay, I wouldn't want to spoil the fun for you but really, the less you know about this movie, the more thrilling it shall be. In fact, you've been "forewarned" upfront as seen in the tagline: "You think you know the story." To be honest, you don't really know it. That's the fun part!

Mini spoiler: I love those glass cases containing different kind of horror characters / monsters! That's a very cool concept!

The ending is relatively sarcastic and to be honest, I find it really apt. If you're a horror movie fan, you definitely must not miss this one!

Movie: Battleship (2012)

The Battle for Earth Begins at Sea

Battleship (2012) is a sci-fi naval war movie based on the classic Hasbro naval combat game, Battleship. I played the game once and I really like it! :D

Synopsis: Young and reckless Alex Hopper (Taylor Kitsch) gets himself into trouble when he tries to court Sam (Brooklyn Decker) who so happens to be the daughter of U.S. Navy's Vice Admiral Shane (Liam Neeson). Frustrated by his behavior, his brother Stone Hopper (Alexander Skarsgård) enlists him into the U.S. Navy. He's assigned as a lieutenant onboard USS John Paul Jones with crew mates Raikes (Rihanna), Ordy (Jesse Plemons), and Beast (John Tui). Together with naval fleet from 13 other nations, the ships are out in the Pacific ocean for a military exercise. Things get out of hand when they encounter an unknown gigantic vessel floating in the middle of the ocean.

Meanwhile back on shore on Oahu, Hawaii, Sam teams up with a double-amputee war hero Mick Canales (real-life Iraq veteran Lt. Col. Greg Gadson) and a communications nerd Dr. Zapata (Hamish Linklater) to foil the aliens' attempts of sending transmission back to their home planet.

I watched this movie twice and honestly speaking, it's more than just a brainless popcorn movie! Battleship is definitely an impressive action-packed blockbuster movie masterfully directed by Peter Berg (Hancock, The Kingdom). Initially, it seems like Hasbro's propaganda move and it's quite hard not to compare Battleship with Transformers. You see the similarities? Brought to you by Hasbro, robots / ETs, things get blown up, a young reluctant hero (Taylor Kitsch versus Shia LaBeouf). Well, if it truly is Hasbro's tactic, it sure is a good one.

With its simple plot strengthened by impressive action sequences, astounding visual effect, intense score by Steve Jablonsky, and a great script with comic-relief moments, Battleship is definitely a winner!

More so, director Peter Berg has these to say and they truly are strong supporting elements of this movie.

How was it taking the USS Missouri out on the sea? "Awesome. That was awesome... And we had all these veterans, these men in their nineties, who came out, put their uniforms on, and they were crying. The ship was out there and people were going crazy. It hadn't been out in ages. Battleship is intended to be a fun movie, but I make no secret of the fact that I'm a huge supporter of soldiers and veterans, and we have real veterans who lost their limbs in our movie. Those guys, the old men that all come out in the end, are all real veterans, and I get emotional around that. It was a great experience for me." [via]

How did you find working with veterans such as Gregory Gadson? "Greg I found in an article on modern prosthetic in National Geographic, and I was flipping through it. I knew I had this character of a wounded soldier, I turn open a page, and there was Greg Gadson in his uniform, all muscle. Like The Rock from here [torso] up, and this intense look, and these two wild-looking robot legs, I'm like 'holy shit, I want that guy'... The veterans, we used veterans' administrations to find living - because a lot of these guys are in their late 90s, one of these guys was 102 - guys who served in World War Two and could still get around, move around. And these guys, there were about forty of them, and they just had the time of their life." [via]

About comic-relief moments, pay attention to Ordy, Dr. Zapata, and also the interaction between Alex Hopper and Captain Nagata (Tadanobu Asano who acts as Hogun in the movie Thor). You will love them! :)

All-in-all, Battleship has proven itself to be a successful addition to the sci-fi alien invasion movie genre. Watch this awesome movie now if you haven't!

This movie is partially educational too as it causes you to want to learn more about the Navy, especially the history of USS Missouri, battleships, destroyers, etc.

Oh, and it causes me to want to buy the Battleship game by Hasbro as well! :D

Movie: The Flowers of War (2011)

The Flowers of War (2011), directed by acclaimed director Zhang Yimou, is an epic Chinese drama war movie set in 1937 during the "Nanjing Massacre".

Synopsis: An American mortician John Miller (Christian Bale) arrives at a cathedral in Nanjing to help bury the deceased priest, only to find himself being among a group of convent girl students and also a troupe of prostitutes from a nearby brothel led by Yu Mo (Ni Ni). He soon realizes that he is their sole protector from the invading Japanese forces. Unwilling at first, he soon discovers the meaning of true sacrifice and honor.

Here's a very good introduction: The Flowers of War is a big movie in every sense of the word, from its kinetic battle scenes to the beautiful photography and impressive performances from a mostly young and inexperienced cast. Any new project from Zhang Yimou is a big deal. He is China's most internationally-renowned filmmaker, praised for both for his bold visual style in films such as Hero and Curse of the Golden Flower, but also for his earlier, more character-driven films, like Ju Dou and Raise the Red Lantern, which detail the plights of young women in oppressive, male-centric societies. [via]

Also, here's Zhang Yimou's message about the movie: No matter what wars or disasters happen in history, what surrounds these times is life, love, salvation and humanity. I hope those things are felt in this story. The human side of the story was more important to me than the background of the Nanjing massacre. Human nature, love and sacrifice - these are the things that are truly eternal. For me, the event is the historical background of the film. But the enduring question of the story is how the human spirit is expressed in wartime.

This is a very thought-provoking and emotional movie. It may stir up unnecessary negative emotional reactions towards a certain nation. So, do watch with utmost discretion.

Movie: Dark Flight (2012)

Have a safe journey

Dark Flight (2012) is Thailand's first 3D horror movie. However, I didn't watch the 3D version.

Synopsis: A senior flight attendant, New (Marsha Wattanapanich) is back on the job after surviving a mysterious inflight incident many years ago. Unfortunately, she's somehow back on the same aircraft again! She realizes it but it's too late for her to turn back. Now, she has to deal with vengeful spirits from the past who are determined to take her life this time as passengers start to be possessed and kill one another.

What a huge letdown. This movie doesn't have that familiar dark and scary element projected by some of Thailand's most successful horror movies. Comedic relief moments that are supposed to diffuse tension is way too much and they are kinda lame. Some scripts are incoherent and wasted, and the CG effects are nothing to shout about.

Marsha Wattanapanich doesn't shine in this movie, not like how she outdid herself in Alone (2007). She doesn't really do much in this movie except freaking out and looking pitiful and sorry all the time. The rest of the cast is... out of place and annoying most of the time.

However, there's one character that deserves to be mentioned. Anchalee Hassadivichit who plays the bitchy woman steals the limelight when she goes berserk and starts to chop everyone up. Some gore and bloody splatters plus scary make-up jobs done on the ghost flight crew are also some of the decent highlights of this movie. That's all. :S

Well, the entire movie is not scary at all and I think it's too mild to be called a horror movie.

Oh well, I think you can give this movie a pass.

Forever is a long, long time, but I wouldn't mind spending it by your side :)

I Wouldn't Mind
He is We

Merrily we fall out of line, out of line,
I'd fall anywhere with you, I'm by your side,
Swinging in the rain humming melodies,
We're not going anywhere until we freeze.

I'm not afraid anymore, I'm not afraid.

Forever is a long time,
But I wouldn't mind spending it by your side.

Carefully we'll place for our destiny,
You came and you took this heart and set it free,
Every word you write and sing is so warm to me,
So warm to me.
I'm torn, I'm torn,
To be right where you are.

I'm not afraid anymore, I'm not afraid.

Forever is a long time,
But I wouldn't mind spending it by your side.

Tell me everyday,
I get to wake up to that smile,
I wouldn't mind it at all,
I wouldn't mind it at all.

You so know me,
Pinch me gently,
I can hardly breath...

Forever is a long, long time,
But I wouldn't mind spending it by your side.

Tell me everyday,
I get to wake up to that smile,
I wouldn't mind it at all,
I wouldn't mind it at all.

Noms ala Korean & Japanese

Home Cooked Japanese Curry with Rice

It's so beef-ily delicious and I was so tempted to take more than one helping!
 Ingredients (to feed 5):
3 medium carrots, 5 small potatoes, 1 medium red apple, 2 yellow onions, some garlic, beef chunks (for soup), Japanese curry sauce, water

Let's cook:
Chop carrots and potatoes into bite-sized chunks. Chop apple and onions into mini dices. Chop garlic coarsely or slice them if you like. Cut beef chunks into smaller cubes.

Sweat onions and garlic over butter in a deep pot, add beef and stir fry until beef changes color. Add carrots, potatoes, and apples. Add water and simmer for 20 minutes over medium heat.

Add Japanese curry sauce and keep stirring to avoid burning. Turn off heat when you get the consistency you want.

Kimchi Soondubu Jigae with Chicken

I had this wonderfully hot and spicy kimchi dish at Dubu-Dubu, Mid Valley while I met up with my high school friend. Landmark: Besides Spaghetti Farm.

What's a Korean meal without kimchi, right? So I went for a steaming bowl of Kimchi Jigae with chicken, tofu, and of course, kimchi. A bowl of brown rice topped with sesame seeds and three side dishes (braised beansprout, kimchi, pickled radish) are also served.

The soup is a bit too spicy for my liking but if you love spicy kimchi soup, you should try this dish.

Note: Dubu-Dubu serves halal Korean dishes.

Movie: Resurrection (1999)

On the brink of genius is the madness of a serial killer

Resurrection (1999) is a horror movie from the director of Highlander.

Synopsis: Detective John Prudhomme (Christopher Lambert) and his assistant, Detective Andrew Hollinsworth (Leland Orser) are assigned to investigate the brutal murder of a man who has bled to death from a severed arm in Chicago. After two more victims with different missing body parts are discovered, Prudhomme realizes he is on the trail of a serial killer who is using the missing limbs to reconstruct the body of Christ... just in time for Easter.

Having a storyline about a sadistic serial killer slaughtering people may be very common nowadays. But for a 1999 movie, I'm pleasantly entertained at how this movie gives the psycho killer's motive a very surprising twist without focusing too much on the gore and wantonness of butchery.

As explained in the synopsis, this deranged psycho is reconstructing the body of Christ by replicating Jesus' suffering and ordeal on the cross before Easter. To do so, he kidnaps six unsuspecting males, cuts off one limb from each person, and lets them bleed to death. The interesting thing is, this psycho is crazy enough to ensure that his victims have the same biblical names with that of Jesus' apostles 2000 years ago! E.g., Peter, James, Matthew, etc. Is he a genius? Or is he just pure evil?

The serial killer's identity is hidden from us during the first 70 minutes or so of the movie. It's during this 70-minute period - I'd say the best part of the entire movie - whereby Prudhomme and the entire Chicago Police Department tries to crack the codes and connect the dots. Then, by sheer luck, the wacko's true identity is revealed. After the discovery, the movie changes its direction and focuses on the wacko going on a mindless and murderous rampage for the next 37 minutes before he's defeated.

Gives a mad man an idea and he's just gonna turn it into something grisly. Being overly fanatic, even if it's related to religion, is not a good thing. Gotta keep things in check.

Overall, this a taut and clever thriller. It's definitely one of the more entertaining serial killer movies from 1999 that you should give it a watch.

Movie: Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (2011)

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (2011) is the sequel to Ghost Rider (2007).

Nicolas Cage reprises his role as Johnny Blaze or the Ghost Rider.

Synopsis: Johnny Blaze (Nicolas Cage), who made a deal with the Devil called Roarke (Ciarán Hinds) is hiding somewhere in Europe to prevent his alter ego, the Ghost Rider from causing more harm to human beings. He is found by a priest named Moreau (Idris Elba) who tells him that he can be freed from the curse of the Ghost Rider forever if he helps to protect a boy named Danny from Roarke.

I have never watched the prequel. So, I don't have much issue with this movie except for the fact that it can be better. The chemistry among the actors is a bit awkward. CG effects are oddly uneven and I feel like I'm watching a half-baked B-grade action movie. I don't know what happened to Cage, but his acting is rather weird, loony, and unimpressive. The entire movie just doesn't make sense and it's quite a sad letdown.

One good thing about this movie is Ciarán Hinds who plays the character Roarke convincingly. He's really mean and menacing.

Well, as long as you don't watch with high expectations, I suppose you won't be too disappointed with it.

Movie: Mirror Mirror (2012)

The Snow White Legend Comes Alive

Mirror Mirror (2012) is a comedy fantasy movie based on the classic tale of "Snow White".

Synopsis: After marrying the beautiful Queen (Julia Roberts) who turns out to be a wicked enchantress, the King (Sean Bean) mysteriously disappears in the woods. 18 years later, Snow White (Lily Collins) rescues Prince Alcott of Valencia (Armie Hammer) from a band of seven 'mini' highway robbers (the seven dwarfs). Snow White later finds out that the evil Queen has been extorting gold from the people of the land. Not only so, she has also plotted to marry the Prince whom Snow White has fallen in love with. The Queen regards Snow White as a threat and orders her to be murdered in the woods, but she is found by the seven dwarfs. Snow White stays with them and grows into an indomitable young woman determined to take back her prince and restore her father's kingdom to its former glory.

Well, well, well. As a comedy movie, it does have its fair share of bone-tickling moments. I quite like this movie's adaptation and its subtle twists from traditional "customs". In this movie, the princess saves the prince and the princess doesn't need to be awakened by a kiss. The seven dwarfs don't look like old men and they are not very kind either. Haha!

Julia Roberts does a really delicate job in portraying her evil character so that she doesn't overwhelm the storyline or the comedic nature of the movie. That's a real treat! Lily Collins' sword fight scenes with Armie Hammer should not be missed too. :)

Overall, it's good to watch this heartwarming movie as a change after watching two dark and intense movies recently - The Hunger Games and Wrath of the Titans. :)

0

Movie: Wrath of the Titans (2012)

Feel the Wrath

Wrath of the Titans (2012) is the sequel to Clash of the Titans (2010).

Synopsis: Ten years after defeating the sea monster Kraken, Perseus (Sam Worthington), the demigod son of Zeus is living a quiet life as a fisherman with his 10-year old son, Helius. Due to humanity's lack of devotion to the gods, they are weakened and begin to lose control over the imprisoned Titans and Kronos in the abyss of Tartarus. Kronos is the father of the three most powerful gods - Zeus (Liam Neeson), Hades (Ralph Fiennes), and Poseidon (Danny Huston).

When Hades and Zeus' godly son, Ares (Edgar Ramírez) make a deal with Kronos to capture Zeus, Perseus answers the call to save Zeus together with Queen Andromeda (Rosamund Pike), Poseidon's demigod son Agenor (Toby Kebbell), and Hephaestus (Bill Nighy), the fallen god who made Zeus' lightning bolt, Hades' spear, and Poseidon' tridum. Only the Spear of Triam, formed by combining the three gods' weapons can defeat Kronos.

When you give Greek mythology to Hollywood, this is the type of movie that you will get, i.e., great performance from A-list actors, visually attractive and awesome CGI, and non-stop action sequences. But, the storyline is not that great because it doesn't stay true to the core of Greek mythology. Oh well, it's just a movie.

If you have watched "Clash", why not watch "Wrath" too?

Project: Reflect 52 #13 - Playing with my eyeballs

My biggest achievement this week is the fact that I can play with my eyeballs! By that I mean I can wear contact lenses!

I've been procrastinating to do this for so many months because I just couldn't believe that eyeballs are actually touchable. The fear of having to touch my own eyeballs with my finger is way too overwhelming.

Now that the fear is gone, the challenge is to put practice makes perfect into practice. Well you see, I'm procrastinating again. LOL!

Update: By the way, I have given my eyes a treat by wearing contact lenses while watching a movie on the big screen on Sunday night. :)
